Richmond International Airport Travel Tips
Keep these travel tips in mind when planning your next trip. And for the most up-to-date security information, visit www.tsa.gov. Travel Tip #1: Pack Smart
- Try to limit your carry-on baggage. The airlines have been enforcing tighter restrictions on the amount of baggage you can carry on the plane. Generally, one bag that fits under the seat or in the overhead bin and one personal item, such as a purse or briefcase, is allowed.
- Place your medicine, jewelry, cameras, and other valuables in your carry-on baggage.
- Luggage ID tags should be filled out, both on the inside and outside of bags, before arrival to the airport. You might also consider labeling items such as cameras, cell phones, and computers.
- Please keep in mind Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security measures regarding liquids and gels when packing your bags. Travelers may carry through security checkpoints travel-size toiletries (3 ounces or less) that fit comfortably in ONE, QUART-SIZE, clear plastic, zip-top bag. At the checkpoint travelers will be asked to remove the zip-top bag of liquids and place it in a bin or on the conveyor belt. X-raying separately will allow TSA security officers to more easily examine the declared items.
- Travelers should reference TSA regulations for specific information about what items are permitted in your carry-on or checked luggage. For a complete list of permitted and prohibited items visit www.tsa.gov.
Travel Tip #2: Arrive Early
- It is recommended that travelers arrive in the terminal approximately 90 minutes prior to departure, although, two hours prior is prudent during peak travel periods. In addition, most airlines have a required bag check of 30-45 minutes prior to departure. With the new security checkpoint procedures and other screening measures in place, passengers should allow adequate time for security checks.
- All airlines at Richmond International Airport offer self-service kiosks as well as personal customer assistance in the ticket counter area of the terminal. Additionally, many carriers offer the option of printing boarding passes from their web sites as much as 24 hours prior to departure
Travel Tip #3: Be Prepared for the Checkpoint
- Boarding passes and government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or passport, are required to access the security screening checkpoints.
- Prepare to remove shoes, coats and outer garments and place in a tray along with your purse, backpack, etc. If you have one, you also must remove your one quart-sized, zip-top bag of liquid, gel or aerosol products from your carryon bag and place it in a bin to be screened.
- All electronic items, such as laptops and cell phones, may be subjected to additional screening. You will need to remove your laptop from its travel case so that both can be X-rayed separately. You may want to label your laptop to avoid mix-ups when several laptops that look alike move through X-ray machines in succession.
