Welcome!

Welcome to Richmond, the Gateway to Virginia's Capital Region. Central Virginia is truly the gateway to the American experience, with more than 400 years of history easily accessible after your arrival at Richmond International Airport.

Consider using the Richmond Region as a hub, as it offers not only a long list of local attractions, but also a short drive to the Atlantic coast, Blue Ridge Mountains, historic battlefields from the Colonial and Civil War eras, the tradition of Colonial Williamsburg, Thomas Jefferson's Monticello, and our nation's capital, Washington, D.C.

Here is just a partial list of nearby regional attractions you may care to visit from Virginia's Capital Region:

  • The Historic Triangle of Williamsburg/Yorktown/Jamestown - the birthplace of American democracy - is a must-see stopping point for any visit to the region, and is not complete without a stroll through the historic streets of Colonial Williamsburg.
  • State Capitol Building - carrying on themes originally presented by Thomas Jefferson in 1785, but meeting the 21st century expectations for the Commonwealth's Capitol, there has never been a better time to visit the recently renovated Capitol.
  • Civil War Trails - "On to Richmond!" was a rallying cry during the conflict which divided a nation from 1861-1865, and Virginia was a primary focus of many of the Civil War's major campaigns. Visit Civil War Trails to plan your battlefield journeys across the region.
  • Monticello, Thomas Jefferson's home near Charlottesville, is just over an hour west of Richmond and offers insight into the brilliance and creativity of one of our Founding Fathers.
  • Virginia Beach is just 90 minutes east of Richmond. Take in the boardwalk and wide Atlantic beaches.
  • Blue Ridge Parkway has been called America's Favorite Drive. Stunningly beautiful, but we urge you to keep an eye on the road! Entry points are noted along Interstate 64, west of Richmond.
  • Washington, D.C. - our nation's capital, reachable via Interstate 95 north of Richmond.
