TERMINAL OVERPASS AND CLARKSON ROAD - IFB #17-2276
The Commission intends to improve the airport terminal access road, which departs from southbound S. Airport Drive, just past the intersection with Clarkson Road. The terminal access road is an overpass, which merges southbound S. Airport Drive traffic with northbound S. Airport Drive U-turn traffic. Plans detail the construction of a continuous through lane for terminal-bound southbound S. Airport Drive traffic. Currently, southbound traffic must exit and merge onto the terminal overpass past Clarkson Road. A continuous through lane will allow for a smoother exit onto the terminal overpass from southbound S. Airport Drive. The improvements necessitate the relocation of drainage inlets, the relocation of the terminal U-turn lane, installation of guardrail, among other details.
Furthermore, the Commission intends to improve the intersection of Clarkson Road and South Airport Drive, nearby the Richmond International Airport. Rental car traffic comprises a large amount of the traffic entering the intersection; the rental car return area is located at the southern end of Clarkson Road. Rental car traffic must cross S. Airport Drive in order to continue onto Clarkson Road. This potentially dangerous movement has recently resulted in vehicular crashes. A solar-powered, oversized stop sign with flashing LED lights around the perimeter is specified for installation on eastbound Clarkson Road. Throughout the project limits, the roadway shall be milled and overlaid, and re-striped according to the plans.
