Second Best Year for Passenger Traffic at Richmond International Airport

Richmond International Airport, VA, January 27, 2009:  Richmond International Airport reports that 3,490,356 passengers utilized the airport in 2008, a 4 percent decrease from the calendar year record of 3,634,544 established in 2007.  Despite the decrease, the 2008 count represents the second-highest annual total in the airport's 80-year history.

For the month of December, total passenger traffic fell 1.7 percent compared to the same period a year ago (278,062 in 2008 vs. 282,802 in 2007), with enplanements down 1.6 percent (141,878 in 2008 vs. 144,156 in 2007) and deplanements down 1.8 percent (136,184 in 2008 vs. 138,646 in 2007).

In 2008, airline market shares in descending order: Delta (24.6 percent), US Airways (23.3 percent), American (10.8 percent), AirTran (10.3 percent), United (9.4 percent), JetBlue (8.2 percent), Continental (7.4 percent), Northwest (4.5 percent), and Air Canada (0.4 percent).
