RIC's March 2011 Aviation Activity Report

Eight Consecutive Months of Passenger Traffic Growth

April 26, 2011

RICHMOND, Virginia (April 26, 2011) - At the monthly meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission, Richmond International Airport released the following information for March 2011 aviation activity:

Passenger Traffic: For March 2011, Richmond International Airport (RIC) reports a 1.6 percent increase in total passenger traffic versus the same month last year (272,654 in 2011 vs. 268,499 in 2010). Passenger enplanements increased 0.8 percent (134,953 vs. 133,828) year over year, while deplanements increased 2.3 percent (137,701 vs. 134,671). For the first nine months of FY2011, total passenger traffic is up 2.0 percent (2,438,861 vs. 2,392,231) compared to the same period a year ago.

Delta Air Lines was the market share leader in March at 30.5 percent, followed by US Airways (23.5 percent) and American (12.9 percent). Four air carriers reported year-over-year growth for the month, including Delta (+15.3 percent), American (+12.3 percent), Air Canada (+8.7 percent) and AirTran (+2.0 percent).

Influencing factors for March passenger traffic included more favorable weather than a year ago, the success of the men's basketball teams from Virginia Commonwealth University and University of Richmond in the NCAA tournament, a substantial rise in energy costs leading to increased ticket prices, and the late arrival of Spring Break and the Easter holiday weekend.

Cargo: Total cargo increased 7.4 percent to 7.64 million pounds (3,463 metric tons) from March 2010. Due to a reporting change by FedEx, a split-out for mail is not available for this period.

Operations: For March, overall aircraft operations increased 9.0 percent versus last year (9,337 vs. 8,565), with general aviation (+28.3 percent), air taxi (+5.5 percent) and air carrier operations (+5.2 percent) reporting year-over-year increases.
