USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia Opens Center at Richmond International Airport

RICHMOND, Virginia (July 2, 2010) - Due to the current and planned significant increases in military population and the large number of military personnel being trained at the specialized schools operating at Fort Lee, there is a clear demand for USO programs and services. A USO Welcome Center is now available for the U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families at Richmond International Airport. Modeled on other airport centers, the new center will offer:

  • Information and Referral- The link between traveling military members and their families, providing accurate, up to date information about the local community.
  • Family Outreach- The primary source of emergency assistance for travelers in need of lodging, transportation or food until appropriate military or community services are identified. The center will also offer Military Family support groups a place to host meetings and activities to better serve and inform the military community. (Partnerships are anticipated with local veteran organizations such as the American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Wounded Warrior Chapters to provide information and assistance.)
  • Quality of Life- A "home away from home" providing on site computer services, food and beverages, library services (books/magazines/newspaper/ video games), toiletries, communication and children's needs.

The USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia will have the grand opening for its tenth welcome center, located at Richmond International Airport (RIC), on Tuesday, July 13th, 2010 at 6pm. State and local elected officials and Army officials are expected to be on hand for the official ribbon cutting ceremony.

It is the mission of the USO of Hampton Roads and Central Virginia to enhance the quality of life of the U.S. Armed Forces personnel and their families worldwide and to create a cooperative relationship between U.S. military communities and involved or supporting civilian communities.
