VMFA's "American Places" Exhibition Opens at Richmond International Airport

June 26, 2012

RICHMOND, Virginia (June 26, 2012) - An exhibition of photographs by Virginia artist William Wylie opens today at Richmond International Airport (RIC). The show will be on view in the first level of the terminal through October 2012.

In this exhibition Wylie uses part of the landscape-in both cases a pathway-to document a place. One is the Cache la Poudre River in northern Colorado; the other is Route 36, a two-lane highway that cuts across northern Kansas. He spent four years working on each project and traveled both routes. With this in mind, the photographs not only reference the places themselves, but also capture a precise moment in time with a specific individual. That relationship is always paramount in Wylie's images.

Wylie lives and works in Charlottesville, Virginia, and was the recipient of a 2011 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Visual Arts Fellowship Award. For additional information about Wylie, please visit www.vmfa.museum/exhibitions/fellowship.
