VMFA's "Common Place" Exhibition Opens at Richmond International Airport
October 21, 2012
RICHMOND, Virginia (October 22, 2012) - An exhibition of photographs by Virginia artist Andrew Zimmermann opens today at Richmond International Airport (RIC). The show will be on view in the first level of the terminal through February 2013.
Photographed within one mile of Zimmermann’s home in Arlington, VA, Common Place explores that sense of strangeness within a strictly limited geographical area. Using a large-format 8x10 inch camera, Zimmermann attempts to capture supposedly ordinary spaces with the greatest attention and care.
“I grew up in suburban Arlington, Virginia. When I was young the place seemed so familiar to me as to be practically invisible,” said Zimmermann. “Only later, when my pursuit of photography introduced me to the visible world, did I begin to notice the beauty and strangeness of the suburban landscape.”
Zimmermann lives and works in Arlington, Virginia, and is the recipient of a 2012 Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Visual Arts Fellowship Award.
