VMFA's "New Light & Rust: Michael Clark and Erling Sjovold" Opens at Richmond International Airport

Art Exhibit on Display Until June 2010

February 16, 2010

RICHMOND, Virginia (February 16, 2010) - In this exhibition, Michael Clark (American, born 1965) and Erling Sjovold (American, born 1961) use their work to convey a sense of place - by underscoring the commonplace and by the use of memory and myth.

Sjovold sets out to describe his idea of place through the use of light and color, but the finished result is essentially a paradox in that it conveys more mystery than clarity.

Clark seeks to capture the beauty in things that are marginal, abandoned, or ruined, transforming mundane industrial elements into unexpected landmarks.

Richmond International Airport is the gateway for Virginia's Capital Region and offers more than 180 daily, non-stop flights on Air Canada, AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, JetBlue Airways, United Airlines, US Airways and their regional affiliates to 19 domestic and international destinations.

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts holdings include some 20,000 treasures spanning more than 5,000 years. VMFA outreach programs through partner organizations across Virginia include traveling exhibitions, artist and teacher workshops, media resources, and lectures.
