Devices will relay real-time location to air traffic control and aircraft Richmond International Airport (RIC) has received grant funding to install Vehicle Movement Area Transponders, or VMATs, on approximately 60 airport ground vehicles. During the monthly meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission, the Commission authorized the execution of the grant from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). “Safety is a top priority throughout the airport, but especially on the airfield where aircraft and ground vehicles are moving in the same areas,” said Perry Miller, Ph.D., A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of Richmond International Airport. “Thanks to this grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration, airport-owned vehicles that regularly access the airfield will be outfitted with a transponder, which increases their visibility and helps to prevent runway incursions.” Transponders have already been installed on 38 Commission-owned vehicles. The $205,200 FAA grant will provide funding to purchase and install 60 news transponders. “Vehicle Movement Area Transmitters (VMATs) help prevent dangerous runway incidents and by accelerating the deployment of this technology, we’re closing critical visibility gaps on our nation’s runways and taxiways,” FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford said in a news release. “This initiative is yet another example of our commitment to proactive safety improvements and strong collaboration across the aviation community.” Installing transponders on ground vehicles will make their location visible to air traffic control and aircraft through the use of Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) technology, which is the same system used to track aircraft positions in real time. Inside the terminal last month, 464,185 passengers visited RIC, marking the second-busiest month in airport history after July 2025 (-0.6%). For calendar year-to-date, passenger volume continues to rise by 1.3% year over year. United and JetBlue Airways were RIC’s fastest growing airlines in July, reporting passenger gains of 21.1% and 19.2%, respectively. In January 2027, Breeze Airways will launch service to Cancún (CUN), Mexico. Next March, Southwest Airlines will be updating its service to add a second daily flight to Nashville, begin new service to Tampa, and pause service to Denver. Total cargo handled in July decreased by 5.2% compared to a year prior to 19.8 million pounds. Aircraft operations fell to 9,385, down by 5.8% or 583 versus July 2025. For more info, visit monthly statistics on the web. The monthly financial report for July showed airport revenues outperformed the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) budget by $807,000 or 12.3% for a total of $7.4 million, according to preliminary, unaudited data. Favorable timing of $649,000 in concession income was the primary factor. Monthly operating expenses were less than budget by approximately $129,000 or 3.2%. This was driven by favorability in professional services, maintenance expenses, and utilities which was partially offset by unfavorable timing of personnel expenses and supply purchases. In other business matters, the Commission reviewed and approved resolutions that support the airport’s strategic priorities, including authorizing the airport CEO to: Execute the construction agreement for the Garage Lighting Replacement 3-4 with MW Co., LLC, DBA National Maintenance Services (NLMS) of Louisville, KY to replace existing lighting and lighted signage in the parking garages with new LED fixtures. The contract award totals $2.16 million and will be fully Commission funded.Execute two grants from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for $119,000 and $250,000, respectively, for the planning, design, and bidding services for pavement reconstruction of identified portions of apron areas west of the passenger concourses. Aprons are where planes park, board, or unload. Ribbon cutting planned for first public art installation Hummingbirds may be seasonal in Virginia, but three of these tiny travelers are making a permanent home at Richmond International Airport (RIC) as part of a new art installation — TRAVEL COMPANIONS. A ribbon cutting ceremony will be held at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, August 11, 2026. Nearly two years in the making, this colorful, engaging sculpture created by artist Matthew Mazzotta will serve as the centerpiece in the newly renovated center core plaza, a greenspace and parking area located between the North and South Parking Garages. “We are excited to welcome our first public art installation, TRAVEL COMPANIONS, to Richmond International Airport,” said Perry J. Miller, Ph.D., A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of Richmond International Airport. “As we enter a period of transformation that will change the face of the airport, this striking artwork featuring the state tree and flower of Virginia will greet passengers and serve as a bright reminder that you’ve arrived at RIC.” As part of its public art plan, the Capital Region Airport Commission, which owns and operates the airport, requested proposals for a large-scale piece of outdoor artwork with the facilitation of its public art consultant, Designing Local. Mazzotta’s piece was selected by an evaluation committee of commission staff, local art professionals, and community representatives with a contract awarded in February 2025 at a total project cost of $400,000. The sculpture was recently installed. Renowned in the public art community, Mazzotta is the artist behind other celebrated projects, including HOME, a giant pink flamingo at Tampa International Airport (TPA), and RISE, a massive, purple-striped jellyfish at San Diego International Airport (SAN). “We worked closely with Matthew [Mazzotta] and our public art consultant, Designing Local, providing feedback, refining our vision to capture Virginia, and finalizing the plans for the beautiful sculpture you see today,” said Rev. Tyrone Nelson, vice chair of the Capital Region Airport Commission. “I’m thrilled to know that the inviting space we dreamed of creating has come to fruition and is available for our community to enjoy.” The 24-foot TRAVEL COMPANIONS sculpture featuring the state tree of Virginia — a flowering dogwood — and three hummingbirds draws parallels between the dogwood and the airport as travel hubs and the hummingbirds and passengers as travelers journeying to their next destination. Mazzotta explained that the radiant colors are inspired by the diverse species and local ecology of Virginia and are a metaphor for the region’s vibrant multicultural community. “TRAVEL COMPANIONS is a celebration of nature, culture, and diversity, reflecting the rich ecological and social tapestry of Virginia,” said Matthew Mazzotta, the creator of TRAVEL COMPANIONS. “These winged travelers often share the very same flight paths we do, serving as a beautiful reminder of our coexistence within a shared world.” To celebrate the airport’s inaugural art installation before its arrival, RIC asked social media fans to suggest names for the birds that fans later voted on. They selected Henry, after Patrick Henry, who delivered the famous revolutionary war era "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death" speech at St. John's Church; Hollywood, after the historic cemetery overlooking the James River; and Hummie Mae, a variation of the runner-up name, Hammie Mae, for a pygmy hippopotamus born at the Metro Richmond Zoo. Named Most Efficient Airport in North America Under 5 Million Passengers Richmond International Airport (RIC) has been named the most efficient airport under 5 million passengers in North America, earning the Air Transport Research Society’s (ATRS) 2026 Global Airport Efficiency Award. The Air Transport Research Society’s Airport Efficiency Excellence Awards recognize airports that demonstrate outstanding operational efficiency, productivity, and cost competitiveness. This year’s results came from a year-long analysis of Fiscal Year 2024 data by the ATRS Global Airport Benchmarking Task Force. The 2026 awards were presented on July 3, 2026, during the 2026 ATRS World Conference held in Beijing, China. Perry Miller, Ph.D., A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of Richmond International Airport, accepted RIC’s awards via video from Richmond, Virginia. He emphasized that a major goal for the airport is delivering an exceptional customer experience while maintaining the fiscal discipline necessary to keep air travel accessible and affordable. “The principles on which the Air Transport Research Society measures airport excellence are integral to how RIC serves its passengers, airline partners, employees, and community every day,” Miller said. “This recognition belongs to the talented professionals of Team RIC whose dedication, innovation, and commitment continue to advance our mission of propelling regional prosperity and our vision of becoming the region’s preferred gateway to the world.” According to an awards’ summary from ATRS, “winners are selected using the residual Variable Factor Productivity index, comparing airports within their region and size category and identifying the efficiency that cannot be explained away by factors such as traffic volume, fleet mix or geography. In other words, what remains is a strong signal of operational excellence.” Every month, RIC tracks factors that are critical to assessing and maintaining airport efficiency, including operating expenses, emergency services, maintenance and repairs, and even promotional costs. This conservative, stakeholder-first approach helps minimize costs for airline partners and the passengers they serve. RIC’s commitment is reflected in its five-year strategic plan, Wheels Up 2030, which is guided by five priorities captured in the acronym POWER: Passenger Experience, Operational Excellence, Workforce Development, Enterprise Revenue and Growth, and Regional Impact and Resilience. These strategic pillars provide a clear framework for sustainable growth and ensure that every investment strengthens the airport’s future competitiveness. 2026 Global Airport Efficiency Award Winners – North America Richmond International Airport (RIC) – Under 5 million passengersIndianapolis International Airport (IND) – 5–20 million passengersFort Lauderdale International Airport (FLL) – 20–40 million passengersCharlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) – 40+ million passengers About Richmond International Airport (RIC) Richmond International Airport’s vision is to be the region’s preferred gateway to the world by focusing on world-class customer experience and operational excellence that drives passenger choice. Transformation efforts shared at monthly airport commission meeting emphasize community, culture, and customer experience Long-term growth and development at Richmond International Airport (RIC) was the focus of discussion at this month’s meeting of the Capital Region Airport Commission (CRAC). As RIC enters a historic period of transformation, headlined by a consolidated security screening checkpoint project which merges two existing checkpoints into one, the airport is taking the opportunity to cultivate a sense of place that reflects the Richmond region. A branding charette, facilitated by design firm 3North and attended by airport stakeholders, business representatives and community members, was held in late April to brainstorm ways to make travelers first impression a memorable one. “This was one of the best events of this kind I have attended, and the results speak for themselves,” said Perry Miller, Ph.D., A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of Richmond International Airport. “I’m excited to move forward and incorporate some of these elements to create a real sense of place here.” Representatives from 3North shared that charette participants emphasized four areas — natural elements, atmosphere, arts and experiences, and history and culture. The results also revealed three themes that center on using the James River as guiding element for airport visitors, leveraging the distinct contrasts within the region to highlight culture, and branding RIC as a “hyper-local landing spot” that celebrates the Richmond region. While the terminal has been bustling with summer vacation travelers, RIC did experience a slight decrease in traffic in May with 445,979 passengers welcomed at the airport, which is 1.8% less than the same month last year. The decrease was attributed to the recent spike in the cost of jet fuel and the cessation of service of Spirit Airlines in the first weekend of May. Passenger traffic data showed a 2.6% increase for FYTD26. Total cargo and aircraft operations both increased compared to May 2025, rising 10.3% and 1.8%, respectively. For more info, visit monthly statistics on the web. A monthly finance report for May showed airport revenues outperformed the FY26 budget, according to preliminary, unaudited data. Monthly operating revenues totaled $8.1 million, exceeding projections by $1.5 million or 25.0%. Fiscal-year-to-date 2026 (FYTD26) revenues rose by $7.3 million or 11.8% to $73.8 million. Monthly operating expenses were greater than budget by approximately $400,000 or 11.7%, largely driven by $212,000 in expenses associated with the Commission’s historical billing and cleanup efforts (which were more than offset by approximately $1.4 million in reclaimed rental and concession income from the same review). FYTD26 expenses totaled $37.8 million, under budget by $1.7 million or 4.3%. In other business matters, the Commission reviewed and approved resolutions that support the airport’s strategic priorities, including authorizing the airport CEO to: Execute a construction agreement for nearly $1.5 million for the Ramp and BHS Surveillance System Project with M.C. Dean Building Intelligence. The project consists of new cameras and infrastructure to support monitoring aircraft ramp operations at concourses A and B and within the baggage handling system.Execute a contract for the replacement of an Aircraft Rescue Firefighting (ARFF) vehicle in the amount of $1.35 million, funded 80% by the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV) and 20% by the airport.Apply to the Foreign-Trade Zones Board for a usage-driven FTZ designation on behalf of LEGO Systems, Inc., and execute the necessary agreements to establish and operate the FTZ site at LEGO’s Regional Distribution Center in Prince George County. Annual revenue of $12,000 is expected from operating fees.Execute a Federal Aviation Administration grant in the amount of $500,000 for the East Side General Aviation Apron 5 Connectors design project. The grant will fund planning, design, and bidding services for two taxiway connectors from Taxiway M to a new taxi lane for the future Apron 5. RIC is boldly modernizing its airport in four key areas simultaneously to improve the customer experience.  Following a few years of pandemic-related turbulence, the aviation industry is once again taking off. In fact, in its latest 20-year annual forecast, Airports Council International (ACI) World predicted total passenger traffic worldwide will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.5%, while respected strategic advisor firm Oliver Wyman revealed that the global aviation fleet is anticipated to grow by 33% by 2033. With these remarkable growth statistics in mind, it’s obvious that airports need to remain vigilant when it comes to investing in technology. It’s a diligence that allows us to operate more efficiently, improve the passenger experience, and stay competitive in a rapidly evolving industry.  The time to act is now. This is why Richmond International Airport (RIC) has proactively begun instituting its own upgrades in four crucial areas—and we’re bravely making these extensive investments at the same time.  Investment One: Cleaner Air A Great Set of GAMS The COVID-19 pandemic heightened awareness of the importance of air quality in preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Travelers are now more conscious of health and hygiene when choosing their travel options. For airports, clean air technology is a crucial component of a comprehensive crisis preparedness plan and can help make RIC the airport of choice for airlines and businesses alike. It’s why RIC has made GAMS environmental monitoring upgrades at Checkpoints A and B with AtmosAir bi-polar ionization. This air purification pairing has been proven to clean air beyond MERV 13 filters, reducing human coronavirus 229E, microorganisms, bacteria, and mold by 99%+. By partnering with AtmosAir and GAMS, we can achieve cleaner air for our travelers and tenants in concentrated areas when social distancing is not possible. RIC will continue to evaluate the system to ensure it’s the best fit going forward. As an airport dedicated to the health and safety of our passengers, team members, and tenants, we will remain abreast of new technologies to see if another comes along to revolutionize processes.  Investment Two: Energy Audits What’s the Use? Energy audits can reap big benefits for an airport and its customers. They not only identify opportunities for energy efficiency improvements, leading to reduced energy consumption and operational costs, but also help lower an airport’s carbon footprint and demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship. At RIC, our energy audit was conducted by Gresham Smith, an award-winning architecture and engineering firm that specializes in essential infrastructure solutions and takes a technology-driven approach to its services. They discovered that RIC’s energy use intensity (EUI) was significantly better when compared to other small hub airports in the United States. Further, based on RIC’s baseline, Gresham Smith made recommendations on possible modifications for future airport upfits to ensure we are at our most energy efficient. This baseline also provided a roadmap for where we want to go in the future. We know that our energy audit can help us be a more competitive choice for operators, from airlines to concessions to terminal tenants. What’s more, it helps us keep overall overhead costs lower. We will continue to use these audit recommendations for future planning and determine how to best incorporate our learnings into upcoming construction and expansions.  Investment Three: Electric Vehicle Chargers Get Recharged The aviation industry is under increasing scrutiny to address its environmental impact. While direct emissions from aircraft are a significant concern, airports can contribute to emission reduction by encouraging the use of electric vehicles on the ground, thereby helping to lower the overall carbon footprint of airport operations. For these reasons and more, RIC invested in two Level 2 electric vehicle (EV) chargers by ChargePoint, the largest network of EV charging stations in North America and Europe. All together, the Valet EV units are capable of charging four vehicles at a time. With a maximum charge rate of 7.2 kw/hr, they currently serve as a convenience to our valet customers and offer numerous benefits. Technology such as this underscores our commitment to sustainability. Plus, we remove one less hassle from the travel experience by giving our customers the peace of mind knowing their vehicle will be fully charged at touchdown. Expanding services like these allows us to be more competitive with other airports in the mid-Atlantic region while further propelling us to becoming our area’s airport of choice. Because of this, we are currently evaluating the addition of more charging stations in the near future.  Investment Four: Robotics The Future Looks ROSIE When it comes to simple ways to save time and increase efficiency, there is little that comes close to robotic floor scrubbers. They operate autonomously, covering large floor areas efficiently in less time than traditional methods. Moreover, pre-programmed routes and cleaning patterns ensure a consistent level of cleanliness throughout the terminal. It’s why RIC invested in Nilfisk Liberty SC50’s robotic floor scrubber, loveably called ROSIE. It was designed specifically for RIC, and with its state-of-the-art technology, we can route a map that delivers between 98% and 99.5% coverage. Our team members do the detail work, while ROSIE performs essential floor care. It runs for six straight hours, covering 55,000 square feet. It offers three cleaning modes, works at night, and has the capability to notify a manager by email of its activities, whether it is currently running, has stopped, or has completed a task. RIC is set to request an additional floor scrubber in the next fiscal year. The 2022 Air Transport IT Insights survey produced in concert by ACI World and SITA, reports that 93% of airports anticipated maintaining their investment in IT or elevating it for 2023. No one wants to be caught in the other 7%. The travel industry is dynamic, and passenger expectations evolve. Investing in a new technology allows airports to adapt to changing travel trends, preferences, and behaviors. Investing in four gives an airport the competitive edge. It’s this relentless drive that helps RIC continue to provide exceptional travel experiences, safeguard its relevance in the aviation landscape, and maintain its ascent as the airport of choice for the mid-Atlantic region.

Record-setting April as passenger counts and cargo volumes rise 3.5% and 18.3%, respectively As Richmond International Airport (RIC) prepares for another year of growth, the Capital Region Airport Commission approved the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) budget, which anticipates $79.2 million in operating revenues, $49.7 million in operating expenses and $166.5 million in total capital projects spending. “The approved budget represents a continuation of the airport’s conservative budgeting methodology which has historically delivered robust financial results,” said Basil Dosunmu, chief financial officer for Richmond International Airport. “This focus on financial stewardship positions the airport for future growth while keeping costs low for our airline operators.” Operating revenues for FY27, which starts on July 1, are expected to surpass the current budget by about $6.2 million or 8.6% for a total of $79.2 million. FY27 operating expenses are anticipated to be $2.0 million or 4.2% more than the current year, totaling $49.7 million. The airport plans to begin 34 new capital projects in FY27, investing nearly $148.1 million in construction, maintenance, and improvements. Cash reserves will fund $111.7 million of those new projects. Almost $16.5 million is budgeted for ongoing capital projects, and an additional $1.9 million is dedicated to departmental capital spending. Enabling projects for the Consolidated Security Screening Checkpoint are planned to begin in late 2026. The transformative project will merge two separate checkpoints, currently located at concourses A and B, into one central location, allowing passengers to freely move between concourses. The project will also increase screening capacity and operational efficiencies for TSA as well as create a post-security space for amenities and concessions development. Estimated at a cost of $253.1 million, the project will include construction of 103,000 sq. ft. of new space and the renovation of 84,000 sq. ft. of existing space on the first and second floors of the airport. The first-year investment in the project for FY27 is $120.0 million with $87.6 million coming from cash reserves. A monthly finance report for April showed airport revenues outperformed the FY26 budget, according to preliminary, unaudited data. Monthly operating revenues totaled $7.0 million, exceeding projections by $1.4 million or 25.0%. Fiscal-year-to-date 2026 (FYTD26) revenues rose by $5.8 million or 9.6% to $65.8 million. Monthly operating expenses were greater than budget by approximately $200,000 or 4.5%, driven by maintenance, supplies, and personnel costs and offset by favorable timing of utilities and professional services expenses. FYTD26 expenses totaled $37.8 million, under budget by $1.7 million or 4.3%. RIC experienced its busiest April ever with 419,181 travelers passing through the terminal, which surpasses the previous record set in 2024 (408,754) and is a 3.5% increase over the same period last year. Passenger traffic data show a 3.1% increase for FYTD26, a gain of over 120,000 passengers. Total cargo and aircraft operations both increased significantly compared to April 2025, rising 18.3% and 2.5%, respectively. For more info, visit monthly statistics on the web. Earlier this month, Breeze Airways announced new nonstop service to Cancun (CUN), Mexico, starting January 8, 2027. Flights will operate twice weekly on Mondays and Fridays. In other business matters, the Commission reviewed and approved resolutions that support the airport’s strategic priorities, including: In separate resolutions, extensions to the operating agreements for Airport Transport International (ATI) and Sun Country Airlines, which both support Amazon cargo operations, were approved through June 30, 2027. Sun Country also provides scheduled seasonal passenger service. A new lease agreement was approved for Quantem Aviation Services consisting of approximately 3,000 square feet of warehouse space and office space in Cargo Building 1 and 8,610 square feet in the adjacent vehicle parking lot. The lease was approved for a three-year term with the option of two additional one-year extensions. The total annual lease amount for the initial term is $22,730.52. Between Memorial Day weekend and August, nearly 1.4 million passengers are expected to pass through the airport as part of their summer vacation travel. Travelers are encouraged to arrive early to allow time for parking, check-in, and security screening. “Escaping to your favorite summer destination is enticing but remember that preparation doesn’t stop with planning the trip,” said Perry J. Miller, Ph.D., A.A.E., I.A.P., president and CEO of the airport. “At RIC, we’re committed to providing all passengers a world-class customer experience from the parking lot to boarding the plane, and your readiness helps us ensure you have a smooth send off.” Check out the tips below and clear the runway for smooth travel this season. (And remember to pack your sunblock.) Summer Vacation Travel Tips Remember the 90/40 Rule: Be in the terminal and check in at least 90 minutes early and be at your boarding gate 40 minutes before departure. Get ahead of the rush by arriving early. Make Time to Get REAL ID: Visit your local department of motor vehicles to obtain your federally compliant REAL ID driver’s license or identification card. Since May 7, 2025, all passengers boarding commercial aircraft have been required to present a REAL ID or another federally approved form of identification. No REAL ID? Be Prepared for ConfirmID: TSA ConfirmID is a fee-based alternative identification process for travelers with a lost ID or without an acceptable form of ID to use when boarding a flight. The cost is $45 and can be paid in advance. Passengers who anticipate needing this service are urged to allow extra time as verification takes an average of 10-15 minutes. Prepare for Security: Have an acceptable ID and boarding pass out and remove electronics, including those larger than a cell phone and your 3-1-1 compliant liquids bag, from carry-on baggage. You can also confirm if TSA Pre-check lane schedules are open before arriving. Start with an Empty Bag: Emptying your backpack, carry-on, or luggage completely before packing for your trip can help passengers avoid accidentally traveling with prohibited items. Use the “Can I bring my…” feature on TSA’s website and the “MyTSA” app to check what items are allowed/ not allowed in carry-on and checked luggage. Follow the 3-1-1 Rule That Limits Liquids, Gels, and Aerosols: Liquids, gels, and aerosols are limited to 3.4 ounces or less in carry-on baggage. All items should fit into one clear, quart-sized bag, and one bag is permitted per passenger. As a general rule, if you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it, or pour it, then the carry-on quantity is limited. Bringing Electronics: You will likely be asked to remove personal electronic devices larger than a cell phone, such as laptops and handheld gaming consoles, from your carry-on bag and place them into a bin with nothing on or under them for X-ray screening. Labeling electronics with contact information or taping a business card to them can help TSA return them to you if they are lost or left behind at the checkpoint. Food is Subject to Inspection: Food items are permitted but may require further inspection. If travelers are not sure whether a food item is considered a liquid or gel, it is best to pack the item in checked baggage or ship it to a destination in advance. Passengers Needing Assistance: Passengers with a disability or medical condition may call ahead to the TSA Cares toll free helpline at (855) 787-2227. Pick Up a Hidden Disabilities Sunflower Lanyard: To support passengers with hidden disabilities, RIC has partnered with Hidden Disabilities Sunflower – USA to bring the Sunflower Lanyard Program to the airport. The lanyard discreetly signals that an individual has an invisible disability and may need additional support. Complimentary lanyards are available at our ticket counters, Applebee’s, valet parking office, and Richmond Region Tourism Visitor Center.
